Anthony nabs sixth place at USA Cyclo-cross National Championships

HARTFORD, Conn. – Crystal Anthony took home sixth place for Maxxis-Shimano at the USA Cyclo-cross National Championships in Hartford, Connecticut last Sunday. After bursting off the start line in third position, the New England native battled with Courtenay McFadden (American Classic/Zones) while enjoying a race in front of a home crowd.

“I was happy with a solid sixth place and had a ton of fun racing in the snow in front of so many friends and family,” Anthony said. “The New England cheering squad was amazing.”

Anthony said she was excited to discover that snow and freezing temperatures would dominate the weekend weather.

“I train in this kind of weather all the time and am most comfortable in tough conditions like this,” Anthony said. “It was the kind of course that you had to focus every single second. At any point you could hit an icy rut and take a tumble.”

Katie Compton (KFC Racing) won the pro women’s race, her 13th championship victory at USA Cyclo-cross nationals.

Anthony’s Maxxis- Shimano teammates, Danny Summerhill and Travis Livermon, did not fare as well on the testing course. Despite slotting into third after a good start, Summerhill suffered a crash that took him out of the race that was eventually won by Stephen Hyde (Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld). Livermon also had a run of unfortunate mishaps forcing him to abandon.

“The course was a blast to ride but very tricky to get through at full speed,” Livermon said. “There were a lot of out of control moments. Bad luck and weather conditions didn’t play in our favor and I was eventually overwhelmed by the bad luck and pulled the plug on the race.”
